The City's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Awareness Commission (IDEC) honors federally recognized heritage and history months throughout the year as part of our commitment to building an inclusive community that values diversity.
In April, we recognize Autism Awareness Month. Autism is a complex brain disorder that often inhibits a person's ability to communicate, respond to surroundings, and form relationships with others.
• In 2023, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that approximately 1 in 36 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, according to 2020 data.
• Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls.
• Most children were still being diagnosed after age 4, though autism can be reliably diagnosed as early as age 2.
IDEC welcomes feedback, ideas, and suggestions to further the mission of inclusivity and respect for all in Warrenville. Submit comments to: idec@warrenville.il.us.
