Residents now have more convenient options to recycle household batteries.
As of January 1, 2026, the Illinois Portable and Medium Format Battery Stewardship Act (SB3686) requires battery manufacturers to fund battery collection programs at no cost to consumers. Because of this change, loose household batteries should not be placed in trash or recycling carts and should instead be taken to a battery collection site.
A convenient local drop-off location is now available:
Warrenville Ace Hardware
2S541 Route 59
(630) 393-1882
The store accepts all household batteries except leaking or defective batteries. Staff will handle the recycling process.
Hours:
Monday–Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Saturday: 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Sunday: 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Residents can also search for additional collection sites using the Battery Network locator: https://batterynetwork.org/locator/
What Is a Household Battery?
Household batteries include most removable batteries used in everyday electronics and devices, such as:
- Standard alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt)
- Rechargeable batteries
- Button batteries
- Lithium-ion batteries from phones, laptops, and small electronics
- Power tool batteries
- Camera batteries
These batteries should be taken to a battery recycling drop-off location rather than placed in household trash or recycling.
