[ARCHIVED] A Quick Guide to Signs in the City

From yard sales to holiday decorations, open houses and campaign signs, here's what you need to know so you are up to City Code:

HOLIDAY DECORATIONS

  • Installed 45 days before the holiday.
  • Removed 30 days after the holiday.
  • Lights are considered temporary wiring, no permit required removed in 90 days.

GARAGE SALE SIGNS

  • No larger than six square feet per face.
  • Can be placed on private property, one foot from property lines, with consent of the property owner.
  • Can be up 24 hours before sale and removed at close of sale.
  • The name and phone number of the person responsible for removal of the sign must be posted on the sign.
  • Signs must remain out of the vision triangle unless the sign is less than 24 inches in height.

OPEN HOUSE SIGNS

  • No larger than six square feet per face.
  • One sign on the right-of-way in front of the house is permitted.
  • Can be placed on private property, one foot from property lines, with consent of the property owner.
  • Can be up 48 hours before viewing and removed at close of viewing.
  • The name and phone number of the person responsible for removal of the sign must be posted on the sign.
  • Signs must remain out of the vision triangle unless the sign is less than 24 inches in height. The visual triangle is the area on either side of a street corner dedicated to being free of signs and other obstructions so that a driver and pedestrian line of site is clear.
  • Up to three balloons may be attached (must be mylar with mylar ribbons not exceeding seven feet from grade).

REAL ESTATE SIGNS

  • No larger than six square feet per face.
  • One sign per lot (except corner lot which can one sign on each frontage).
  • One sign may be placed off site on private property with written permission. Must remain one foot from the property line. No other signs are allowed to be displayed.
  • The sign must be removed five business days after closing/lease date.
  • Signs must remain out of the vision triangle unless the sign is less than 24 inches in height.

CAMPAIGN SIGNS

  • Can be placed on private property, one foot from property lines, with consent of the property owner.
  • Signs must remain out of the vision triangle unless the sign is less than 24 inches in height.
  • Campaign signs installed on residential property cannot exceed 16 square feet per side.
  • Campaign signs are exempt from any time limit regulations.

There are other requirements for signs, but those listed above are the most common for code enforcement activities.
