BATTERY RECYCLING FYI Jan 2026

Got old batteries at home? Here’s the good news: battery recycling just got easier, and it’s FREE.

As of January 1, 2026, Illinois’ new Portable and Medium Format Battery Stewardship Act (SB3686) requires battery manufacturers to support battery collection at no cost to residents.

That means loose household batteries (regular and rechargeable) should go to a battery drop-off site, not your trash or recycling cart.
