New Telephone Scam Alert

Telephone Scam
A new telephone scam appears to be circulating, in which the caller claims to be associated with the Illinois State Police (ISP) and asks for donations for officers who have died in the line of duty. According to resources, the phone number most often identified with this scam is 312-789-5176.  Please be aware that this telephone number may be manipulated by the caller via a tactic called “spoofing,” in which the phone number can be manipulated.

Remember a few personal safety telephone scam tactics of your own.  Never give your personal information out over the telephone; you are in control of the call. Verify the caller’s information by asking questions and saying you will call them back after it can be verified with the vendor or agency they are representing. If the caller becomes belligerent or threatening, tell them you are hanging up and calling 9-1-1, then do so.

If you believe you have been the target of this or any telephone scam, please contact the Illinois Attorney General’s office at: 1-800-386-5438 (TTY 1-800-964-3013), or visit the Illinois Attorney General's website listed below.
