Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Accidents

On April 24, the City submitted a letter to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) regarding the vehicle vs. pedestrian and bicyclist accidents on IL Route 59 at Continental Drive/Meadow Avenue.  The letter included the following eight safety recommendations from the Bicyclist and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC):

- Reduce the speed limit on Route 59 from 45 mph to 35 mph.
- Alter the timing of the traffic lights for pedestrian safety.
- Improve pavement markings to indicate the presence of pedestrians.
- Improve lighting along Route 59 leading up to and included the intersection.
- Add pedestrian-related signage visible to individuals driving north and south on Route 59.
- Change the programming on the countdown timers so that they run with every light change.
- Consider a safety or guard rail to encourage pedestrians to use the crosswalk.
- Recognize that pedestrians are part of the transportation system and identify potential safety improvements by investigating the injuries and deaths from a pedestrian perspective.

IDOT has since responded to the City’s request indicating that they will review the conditions and notify the City of the results of their review.
