Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness Week Begins April 24th

During the week of April 24th, the Police Department will be participating in the first ever Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness Week (IDDAW); a traffic safety initiative House Resolution 216 recognizes "to create and enhance a strong, supportive traffic safety culture throughout Illinois.”

Illinois driving law changed in 2014 to ban the use of all hand-held electronic communication devices while driving on a roadway. In part, Public Act 098-0506 defines an electronic communication device as, “…a hand-held wireless telephone, hand-held personal digital assistant, or a portable or mobile computer...”  The law does have its exceptions, the most common of which include:

• GPS or navigation systems physically or electronically integrated into the motor vehicle
• A device which is being used in a hands-free or voice-operated mode
• Reporting an emergency situation and communication with emergency personnel
• When the vehicle is stopped due to normal obstructed traffic conditions and while the vehicle’s transmission is in the Neutral or Park position

The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police partnered with AAA to coordinate and this IDDAW effort. Warrenville locations for this state-wide enforcement initiative will be announced in the near future. In addition, the police department electronic sign trailer will be moved throughout the City to alert drivers to this traffic initiative.  To learn more about the Illinois distracted driving law, please follow the link provided below.
