RUMOR: City Illegally Took Money Earmarked for Flood Protection

Fact: this rumor is incorrect.

As part of its ongoing effort to reduce flooding and advance flood mitigation efforts, DuPage County supports the public acquisition of flood prone properties and buildings. The City and County have communicated, on multiple occasions, with representatives of the owners of the flood prone properties at 28W224 (Voegtle’s Auto Service) and / or 28W244 (Citgo Gas Station) Warrenville Road regarding the possible voluntary sale of these properties. The door remains open for that possibility. The public acquisition of these properties would be consistent with the City’s Old Town/Civic Center Subarea Plan more than 100 residents helped develop in 2007 and DuPage County’s 2010 West Branch of the DuPage River Watershed Plan Addendum.

DuPage County estimates the cost savings from not building a flood protection berm along the west bank of the DuPage River north of Warrenville Road is approximately $750,000. The $750,000 has not been given to or taken by the City. The City and County have executed a Memorandum of Understanding documenting the County’s conditional commitment to contribute up to $750,000 toward the City’s potential future purchase of the flood prone properties located at 28W224 and / or 28W244 Warrenville Road. A copy of the memorandum of understanding is available at the link below - see County responsibility number 3.
